Merriam leads Christos’ shutout of Starliners
Former West Virginia standout Jamie Merriam scored a goal and assisted another as Christos FC blanked Starliners FC 3-0 in a Stewart Cup semifinal on Sunday.
Nick Gumbs (UMBC) and Jacob Bender (Messiah) scored the other goals for Christos, which advances to face Yinz United in the Stewart Cup championship on March 1. Alex Lee (Maryland) also contributed an assist, while goalie Brad Benzing (Millersville) stopped three shots to record the shutout.
Winner of that March 1 match moves into the USASA Region 1 Championships with a chance to capture the U.S. Amateur Cup.
This weekend, Christos FC meets Brainstorm FC at Blaindair Park in the Maryland Champions League for the Rowland Cup. Christos, sponsored by the Linthicum-Ferndale liquor store of the same name, currently holds first place in the Maryland Champions League with two games remaining until the playoffs.
